Match Preview: Bay FC vs. Kansas City Current | October 12, 2024

Bay FC (9W-13L-1D; 28 pts) returns home to host Kansas City Current (13W-3L-7D; 46 pts) at PayPal Park on Saturday, October 12 at 7:00 p.m. PDT. In stadium, Bay FC is honoring Latino Heritage Night.

As part of the celebration, fans can see a variety of cultural performances, including Spartan Mambo, Cunamacué and Los Bahianatos in Plaza del Bay FC (FanFest), Gabriela Sepúlveda singing the national anthem, and Grupo Folklorico Los Laureles at halftime. The night will also include education, recognition of community organizations, and a special item of the match  t-shirt designed by local artist Emilio Cortez as well as a limited-edition Latino Heritage Night pin. Learn more here.

This match marks the first time former Bay FC defender Kayla Sharples will return to PayPal Park after joining Kansas City. In August, Bay FC acquired Jordan Silkowitz and Allocation Money from the Current in exchange for Sharples.

Kansas City sits at 4th in the NWSL standings and is coming off a 2-0 win on the road against Racing Louisville FC. Bay FC’s defense will have its hands full with Temwa Chawinga, the NWSL’s first Malawian player, who has a firm lead in the Golden Boot race with 18 goals and 6 assists. The last time these two teams met, Chawinga scored her first brace in the league.

With powerful offenses on both sides of the field, this match could be a scoring battle. Asisat Oshoala has been in her best form of the season for Bay FC in recent matches, scoring the team’s last four goals to bring her total to seven on the year. Oshoala and Racheal Kundananji connected last week against NJ/NY Gotham FC, with Kundananji providing the assist for their first combined goal of the season.

Bay FC currently sits in 8th place in the NWSL table, and a result against the Current could help them solidify their position as they battle for the playoffs. Over the weekend, Bay FC fans can also keep an eye on results from Portland Thorns FC, who currently sit just above Bay in 7th place, and Racing Louisville FC, who are just behind Bay in 9th place.
