Bay FC falls 2-1 on the road to Washington Spirit

Dorian Bailey tallies first goal for club, Asisat Oshoala records first NWSL assist


WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 23, 2024) – Bay FC, the Bay Area’s new women’s professional soccer franchise in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), conceded a late goal in second-half stoppage time, falling 2-1 to the Washington Spirit at Audi Field on Saturday afternoon. Dorian Bailey notched the lone goal for Bay FC, while Asisat Oshoala tallied her first assist in the league. 

Following back-to-back road matches, Bay FC returns home to play host to the Houston Dash in their inaugural home match at PayPal Park on Saturday, March 30; kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (Pacific) on ION.

Firsts + Debuts
Bailey tallied just the second goal of her professional career, dating back to her rookie season in 2019. It was her first goal for Bay FC, and her first goal since June 2, 2019, against Utah Royals FC. Bailey also earned her first start for the club in the match, playing all 90 minutes. Asisat Oshoala tallied her first assist for Bay FC. Jen Beattie made her NWSL debut in the match, starting and playing 67 minutes.

Goal-Scoring Plays
BAY – Dorian Bailey (Asisat Oshoala), 11th minute: Oshoala received the ball in space, making a run down the right side of the field. Oshoala dribbled to the endline and slotted the ball back across the middle of the box for Bailey, who fired a shot from 10 yards out past the outstretched arms of Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe.

WSH – Hal Hershfelt (Trinity Rodman), 23rd minute: Trinity Rodman played a short pass to Hal Hershfelt near the right corner of the box. Hershfelt turned and unleashed a swerving strike into the left side of the net.

WSH – Croix Bethune (Ashley Hatch), 90+5 minute: Ashley Hatch flicked the ball on for Croix Bethune near the edge of the box. Bethune attempted to control the ball inside the box, and after multiple deflections she pounced on the loose ball, finishing from eight yards out.

Notes:

  • Dorian Bailey earned her first start for Bay FC in the match, which came against her former team. Bailey was drafted by the Spirit in the 2019 NWSL College Draft.
  • Bailey scored just her second career goal as a professional and her first goal for Bay FC.
  • The goal was Bailey’s first since June 2, 2019, against Utah Royals FC in her rookie campaign with Washington.
  • Bailey made her 75th career NWSL appearance in the match.
  • Jen Beattie made her NWSL debut, starting and logging 67 minutes. 
  • Beattie is the fourth international player (Castellanos, Oshoala, Proulx) to make an appearance for Bay FC this season.
  • She is the fourth Scottish player to play in the league, joining Kim Little, Rachel Corsie and Claire Emslie.
  • Emily Menges wore the captain’s armband for the first time for Bay FC.
  • Asisat Oshoala recorded her first NWSL assist. 
  • Oshoala has a goal contribution (1G, 1A) in each of her first two matches this season.
