Bay FC begin their Summer Cup journey against San Diego Wave FC on July 20 at 7:00 p.m. PDT at Torero Stadium. In this brand-new tournament, each match is crucial to determine the top four teams who will move onto the semifinals.
Bay FC will be without Asisat Oshoala, Racheal Kundananji, and Lysianne Proulx, who will join Nigeria, Zambia, and Canada for the 2024 Paris Olympics, respectively.
San Diego Wave FC has sent five players to the Olympics, including Kailen Sheridan for Canada, Emily Van Egmond and Kaitlyn Torpey for Australia, and Naomi Girma and Jaedyn Shaw for the United States. As a result, they’ve signed defender Chai Cortez and goalkeeper Caroline DeLisle as National Team Replacement Players.
With both teams losing key players to the Summer Olympics, expect to see new lineups on the field. The match presents a huge opportunity for Bay FC’s young players to make their mark. San Diego has also recently had a change off the pitch, with the departure of former head coach Casey Stoney announced in June. They will be coached by interim head coach Paul Buckle.
In two previous matchups this season, Bay and San Diego each secured a win. Both matches ended in a 2-1 scoreline, with the home team emerging victorious. Bay FC will look to flip that pattern on Saturday when they travel to San Diego and claim their first road win against the Wave.
