Bay FC and corporate sponsor PG&E partnered with the Golden Gate Bird Alliance and East Bay Regional Park District for a Day of Service at Arrowhead Marsh in Oakland on Tuesday, July 21. With thirty Bay FC employees and five players in attendance – including Alyssa Malonson, Joelle Anderson, Heather Gilchrist, Maddie Moreau and Karlie Lema – the team contributed 60 volunteer hours to collect 180 gallons of trash.
According to KCBS San Francisco, that trash can include anything from fishing gear, toys and even medical waste, and often stems from creeks feeding into the marsh as well as park users leaving things behind. This effort helps restore the local shoreline habitat that supports the endangered Ridgway’s Rail and other waterfront bird species.
Malonson wanted to do a beach cleanup as a way for the team to give back to the community all around the region, a passion she’s had for a while. Beyond trash removal, Bay FC also learned more about the local wildlife and natural spaces that make the Bay Area such a remarkable place to call home.
