Alexia Putellas and Aitana Bonmatí: Two Ballon d’Or winners heading to the United States

FC Barcelona women’s team is about to embark on its preseason tour in the United States. The tour will first pit them against Bay FC in San José, California, and then take them to Dallas, Texas, where they’ll face Dallas Trinity FC. This is a unique opportunity for the blaugranas to continue growing and showcasing their quality across different parts of the world.

Pere Romeu’s Barça features two key players. The first is the “Queen,” a leader, captain, and club icon practically since her arrival. The 2021 and 2022 Ballon d’Or winner, Alexia Putellas, joined FC Barcelona in 2012 at the age of 18 after playing for RCD Espanyol and Levante UD for one season each.

Putellas is one of FC Barcelona’s biggest stars, not just because she boasts two consecutive Ballon d’Or titles, becoming the first woman in history to achieve that feat. Wearing the number 11, she was the first player to score at both the Johan Cruyff Stadium and the modern Camp Nou. Since joining the club, the team has won seven Copa de la Reina titles, seven league titles, and three Champions League trophies (2021, 2023, and 2024).

In 2023, Alexia Putellas also became a World Champion with the Spanish national team, alongside another key player from Romeu’s Barça. Aitana Bonmatí, the 2023 Ballon d’Or winner, has risen to become one of the most prominent midfielders on the national stage. She took her first steps at La Masia and developed through the ranks until reaching the first team in 2016.

Bonmatí, a symbol of FC Barcelona and its values, has steadily established herself as a pivotal figure in the midfield. In 2019, she was named Catalonia’s Player of the Year, and during the UWCL final that Barça won in Göteborg, she was crowned MVP. Her growth has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Alexia and Aitana. Two essential players in shaping the new Barça under Pere Romeu. Two Ballon d’Or winners. Two leaders. Two pillars of a brilliant team that, in just a few days, will play two matches in the United States as part of their preseason tour.
