Bay FC Announces Coaching Staff Ahead of Inaugural Season

Jason Goodson, Angela Salem join as the club’s assistant coaches, Diego Restrepo named head of goalkeeping.

San Francisco (Dec. 14, 2023) Bay FC, the Bay Area’s new women’s professional soccer franchise in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), has hired Jason Goodson and Angela Salem as the club’s assistant coaches. The team also appointed Diego Restrepo as head of goalkeeping. All three coaches will support and work closely with head coach, Albertin Montoya.

Goodson comes to Bay FC with more than 12 years of college experience as a recruiting coordinator at Washington State University, Ohio State University and the University of Kentucky. Goodson was most recently the director of coaching with Reno MVLA Soccer Club. A native of San Jose, Calif., Goodson’s coaching career started in 1996 with the Leahi (Hawai’i) Soccer Club, followed by various coaching positions in Hawaii, including the director of coaching at the Ho’okalakupua Futbol Academy from 1999-2005. Goodson holds an A license from the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) and a premier diploma from the United Soccer Coaches.

Salem served as an assistant coach with the Washington Spirit during the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Prior to making the move into the coaching ranks, Salem played professionally for 12 years in the United States, including nine seasons in the NWSL, along with stints in Australia and Finland. She retired at the end of the 2021 season, earning NWSL Best XI honors as a midfielder and was an MVP finalist with Portland Thorns FC. A native of Akron, Ohio, Salem has a USSF B license and a Master of Education in counseling from Springfield College (Mass.) where she was a graduate assistant working with the women’s soccer program.

“Our three new coaching staff members bring extensive soccer expertise to set us up for great success in our inaugural season and I look forward to working alongside Jason, Angela and Diego to build a player-centric and fan-focused football club that is fun to play for and exciting to watch,” said Albertin Montoya, Head Coach of Bay FC. “Our coaching team will further help empower our players to reach their full potential and support them as exceptional athletes and people before, during and after they play for Bay FC.”

After two years at D.C. United, Restrepo joins Bay FC as its head of goalkeeping. Prior to his coaching career, Restrepo was a goalkeeper both in the U.S. and South America, playing in the first division in Colombia and Venezuela. Domestically, he gained experience with United Soccer League (USL) sides Austin Bold, San Antonio FC and Charlottle Independence as well as with the Tampa Bay Rowdies and Ft. Lauderdale Strikers in the Northern American Soccer League (NASL). He made more than 100 professional starts and was named USL Goalkeeper of the Year and USL Best Eleven in 2017.

Bay FC General Manager Lucy Rushton previously worked with Restrepo at D.C. United, where she hired him at the start of the 2022 season prior to his goalkeeper role with Austin FC academy. Restrepo will play a pivotal role in helping Bay FC drive new standards for goalkeeping in the NWSL.

“Restrepo is a modern, forward-thinking goalkeeper coach who has great attention to detail,” said Lucy Rushton, General Manager of Bay FC. “During our work together at D.C. United, he consistently delivered elite coaching sessions which continuously challenged and developed goalkeepers.”
