WASHINGTON (Aug. 30, 2026) – Bay FC fell 1-0 Sunday at the Washington Spirit in a nail-biter from the nation’s capital. A wide-open contest saw Bay FC threaten throughout the day, outshooting their foes with an impressive 19 total shots and keeping the Spirit attack to just four attempts on target. A score in first half stoppage time by Washington served as the decider, even as Bay FC continued its streak of strong showings.
“I really feel for my team and my players today,” said head coach Emma Coates. “I didn’t think we deserved to lose. I thought we gave a real good account of ourselves. I thought in the first half we probably had some longer spells in possession. I thought our build and creating phase was very good. I thought in the second half we were probably the team that created more dangerous chances. We just then let the game get a bit transitional; they removed some of our ways that we were sort of like building and progressing. But as I say, I thought the game was in balance, [and] I probably thought a draw would have been a fair result.”
Action was end-to-end to open the match as each squad pushed downhill in transition. But both backlines stood tall in their structure to keep threatening moments from reaching goal. Bay FC had the half’s best chance just two minutes into the contest, when an open look at goal by forward Alex Pfeiffer after an intercepted pass in the attacking third was stopped by Washington goalkeeper Sandy MacIver.
Bay FC earned more opportunities following the first-half hydration break. Pfeiffer tested her luck again at the 38-minute mark after a strong give-and-go combination with midfielder Taylor Huff, but saw her shot saved at the near post. The club came inches from the opening score moments later as Huff served to forward Karlie Lema from the left, but the Cal product’s first-touch effort glanced off the crossbar and away from goal, getting denied by the woodwork.
Washington broke the deadlock in first half stoppage time after forward Trinity Rodman won the ball one-on-one before charging towards goal. Bay FC looked to catch a break after her shot hit the crossbar, but the ricochet fell to defender Paige Metayer crashing the box for a one-touch finish.
Bay FC nearly leveled the scoreline ten minutes into the second half after building up the pitch from its own box. Midfielder Claire Hutton took advantage of space outside the penalty area and let loose a shot from distance, challenging MacIver at the left post. Pfeiffer pounced on the follow-up attempt, but saw her effort miss the target from close range.
A batch of changes at the hour mark helped Bay FC claim more possession and pin back their hosts as the second half progressed. Forward Cristiana Girelli, on as a substitute for Lema, came inches from a score in the 67th minute with a header from distance that was touched off the bar and away by MacIver, nearly her second goal in as many games.
Bay FC continued knock on the door as time ticked down, outshooting their foes 10-8 in the second half. The club welcomed back forward Racheal Kundananji for her first appearance since July 18 after representing Zambia at the Africa Cup of Nations, but despite a stellar effort, the club wouldn’t put one over the line before the final whistle sounded.
