SANDY, Utah (Aug. 14, 2026) – Bay FC fell to the Utah Royals Friday night in a 3-2 result at America First Field. An eventful first half saw four goals scored between the two clubs, including the first pro goal for Bay FC defender Heather Gilchrist. A hard-fought second half proceeded to the final ten minutes deadlocked at two goals apiece, but Utah broke the tie from the penalty spot to take all three points.
“Sometimes football can be a very love-hate relationship, and we can’t beat ourselves up on the outcome because actually, in the balance of play, we gave a really good account of ourselves,” said head coach Emma Coates. “I don’t want the players to beat themselves up too much because I do feel we’ve gone toe to toe and lost on such fine margins. There’s absolutely positives we can take.”
Action got going quickly after the opening whistle as Bay FC netted the first goal of the match just six minutes in. Utah attempted to cycle play through goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn, whose attempt to clear the ball away was blocked by a pressing Karlie Lema and over the line to give Bay FC the lead. Utah would respond nearly immediately after the ensuing kickoff, however, as defender Miyabi Moriya corraled a tough-luck bounce for Bay FC and slotted a shot attempt into the back of the net from close range.
The hosts pulled ahead near the midway point of the first half after a quick restart got the Royals moving downfield quickly. Utah forward Cloe Lacasse played to the feet of midfielder Narumi Miura to change the point of attack, who loaded up towards goal and put a long-distance effort into the back of the net.
Bay FC answered seven minutes later to continue the first half chaos. A set piece opportunity served in by midfielder Kennedy Fuller was nearly headed through by Claire Hutton in traffic but was cleared away by Utah’s backline. Fuller again served into the box on the resulting corner kick, finding midfielder Hannah Bebar for a flick-along to Gilchrist to send it through on the back post, the Florida State product’s first pro goal. Gilchrist would go 62 minutes in her first NWSL start.
Each side nearly found another before the break. A Utah cross after the half-hour mark took a deflection on its way from the right flank, falling to the feet of an attacker inside the six-yard box. Bay FC was able to dispel the threat, keeping the match level before nearly pulling ahead going into stoppage time, but a shot attempt by forward Alex Pfeiffer following a fast break down the right side was blocked before being scooped up by the goalkeeper.
Utah pulled ahead with ten minutes to go after being awarded a penalty. Bay FC goalkepeer Jordan Silkowitz initially denied the attempt by Royals forward Mina Tanaka, but the referee went to the monitor for a review. The kick was retaken after VAR showed Silkowitz had come off her line early and put into the back of the net to give Utah the lead.
A week after Gilchrist’s NWSL debut, Bay FC celebrated two more during the second half. Defender Jenna Nighswonger entered for Gilchrist after the hour mark, marking her return to the NWSL for the first time since November 2024. Forward Agostina Holzheier entered the contest for Lema with less than ten minutes to go as Bay FC looked to equalize.
Bay FC returns home next week, hosting the Houston Dash at PayPal Park Sunday, August 23. The club will celebrate its Black Heritage Match, recognizing community leaders and organizations from across the region.
